Music Monday. Guys and Dolls.

Rules from Lauren:
Every Monday share one or two of songs you’ve been enjoying lately.  It doesn’t have to be a specific genre, new, or one of your favorites – just something you’d like to share with others.  If possible, share a music or lyric video of the song and your thoughts on the song(s), artist(s), and/or music video(s).

If you would like to participate in Music Monday, please join the link up by sharing your post’s url over at this week’s post on Always Me.

Hello everyone!

Sorry for a lack of posts last week. We were gone for about 10 days on a lovely trip to Europe, and while I was gone I had a few posts a week set up. Then we got back and…LIFE HAPPENS. 🙂 Busy getting back into the swing of things around here since we got back.

I had planned on posting this week’s music last week. Better late than never. Here goes…

Guys_and_dolls_movieposterMy son just finished a two week performing arts camp which concluded with two performances of Guys and Dolls, one of my all-time favorite musicals. My son played Lieutenant Brannigan (always trying and failing to bust up Nathan Detroits Crap game), and had a blast. We’ve been singing A LOT of Guys and Dolls around our house.

If you’ve never seen it, Guys and Dolls centers around the world of gambling, and asks can you (and should you) change the person you love? What happens if you fall for someone who just isn’t good for you?

The film stars Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit and Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson. Interestingly enough, Frank wanted to play Sky but was cast as Nathan. Looking back, this does seem like an odd choice, as Nathan really doesn’t have a lot of solo singing. They modified the film version a bit so Nathan Detroit does sing a little more in the ensembles, and even wrote Frank a love song to sing to Adelaide. Honestly I couldn’t imagine Frank playing anyone BUT Nathan.

I’ll warn you – I couldn’t keep it to two songs this week. Sorry. (not sorry.) I love this show!

Fugue for Tinhorns – Nicely Nicely Johnson & Benny Southstreet

The Oldest Established – Company

Luck Be a Lady – Sky Masterson

Sue Me – Nathan Detroit & Adelaide

Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat – Nicely Nicely & Company

BONUS – Frank Sinatra Singing Luck Be a Lady

Whew. Some great music in this show! But I’ll confess – this was what we were listening to last week. This week I’ve dovetailed off of Guys and Dolls and been into some big band and crooners tunes. I’ll share a few of those next week if I’m still on my crooner kick.

It feels good to be back. Happy Monday!
