TTT: From the Pages of a Book to the Silver Screen

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday (TTT) brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish.

You never know how a book adaptation is going to go. Sometimes, it’s a flop. (Percy Jackson, anyone?) Sometimes it’s better than the book (Jane Eyre was for me.) Sometimes you refuse to see it because you know it will ruin the books forever. (Tom Cruse as Jack Reacher? I don’t think so.)

Most of the time, I enjoy the film adaptations. They may not always follow the book perfectly, but they are fun to watch.

This week, I’ve split my top ten (eleven!) into three categories. Shall we?

Top Ten (er, eleven) Book To Movie Adaptations

…I’m Looking Forward To

TTT_BooktoFilmLookingForwardTo

  • Through the Looking Glass
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • Inferno

…I Still Need to Watch

TTT_BooktoFilmNeedtoSee

  • Maleficent
  • Cinderella
  • The Fault in our Stars
  • Perks of Being a Wallflower

…My All Time Favorites

TTT_BooktoFilmFavorites

  • The Princess Bride
  • The Lord of the Rings
  • Bedknobs and Broomsticks
  • Stand By Me

I love films. This was a tough list for me to narrow down. (Hence, the top eleven.) What did I miss? (My husband would say The Shawshank Redemption under all time favorites.) What’s up and coming that I need to watch? Comment below and link up to your TTT if you’ve got one!

  1. I tend to like short stories made into movies. That way, there isn’t as much lost between page and screen. That seems to happen more with science fiction. – or maybe that is just where I pay attention! Minority Report and Paycheck both come to mind as quirky engaging stories that made the leap well.

    • I read the B&B book a few years ago and it’s one of the few that I can say I enjoy the movie better than the book. Cinderella has kicked off a huge live action craze – I forgot to add The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast to this list, which are coming next year I think? I really can’t wait to see Beauty – what an amazing cast!!

    • Thanks Carrie! Looking at another list I realized I totally forgot Sisterhood of the The Traveling Pants and the new Great Gatsby film. I haven’t seen those yet – should have had them on this list too. I read a spoiler on Maleficent, and since I know how it ends I haven’t been motivated to watch it yet.

  2. Nice list. I thought Cinderella was good, we liked it- not perfect, but not bad either. Ah, the PRincess Bride and Lord of the Rings. I’ve never read the Princess bride but the movie- just awesome. Bedknobs and Broomsticks was a favorite growing up, loved that movie.

  3. *cheers for the Princes Bride* I HAVE INFINITE LOVE FOR THAT MOVIE AND CAN FULLY QUOTE THE FULL THING. And omg you need to see Perks someday! It’s beautiful and sad and I think it was super faithful to the book, which is always nice. :’) Let’s just….not….talk about the Percy Jackson movie. *cringes* DID THEY EVEN READ THE BOOK? I DON’T THINK SO. Here’s my TTT!

    • My boys and I quote The Princess Bride all the time! Such a great film. One of my all time favorites. I need to read the Perks book and then I’ll watch the movie. I’ve heard great things about both! And totally agree with PJ.

  5. Great list! Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Inferno would have been on my list as well if we had trailers for them yet. I’m pretty excited for both. Oddly enough I haven’t read any of the Dan Brown books, but I loved the movie Angels and Demons.
