Top Ten Tuesday (TTT) brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish.
November 14: Top Ten Books I Want My Future Children to Read (Or nieces and nephews, Godchildren, etc.)
Hmm…reading this prompt I guess I’m an *old* TTT blogger, since I already am the mother of two children (with zero plans to add any more in the future). 😉
This is a topic very near and dear to my heart. I have two boys, now fifth and eighth grade (where does the time go?!), who are very passionate readers. Right now we read and recommend books to each other, and listen to books together in the car. I’m not adding these to the list, as we are discovering them together. (We are particularly big on adventurous/magical book series like Percy Jackson and Peter and the Starcatchers.)
I know that sometimes you love a book or a genre, but your kids just don’t – and that’s okay. My mom loved cowboy and horse books, but they were just never my thing. I always felt bad that I didn’t like them because she was so excited about them and wanted to share the love she had for those stories. I’m happy that my boys have enjoyed some of my recommendations. Trust me, there have been plenty that they’re just not interested in.
Favorite Picture Books from My Childhood that We Read Together
- An Invitation to the Butterfly Ball by Jane Yolen, Illustrated by Jane Breskin Zalben
- Walt and Pepper by Lisl Weil
Books I Read BK (Before Kids) that My Boys also Enjoyed
- Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling (Prisoner of Azkaban is my personal favorite, and each of my boys has his own favorite.)
- The BFG by Roald Dahl
- Bunnicula by James Howe and Deborah Howe
Books I Hope They Read When They are Older
- Any Book by Agatha Christie
- The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
- 11/22/63 by Stephen King
- The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde (they enjoyed the play)
- As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride is one of our favorite films)
Now I’ve got TONS MORE that I could add to this list. I mean, I want my boys to READ ALL THE BOOKS! But these are some of my favorites.

Oooh I loved 11/22/63! And The BFG is a classic. Any children’s story by Dahl would probably be required reading for my future kiddies! Nice list!

I went to an event with Cary Elwes this past Sunday, and he talked about the film, and his book a little. He read The Princess Bride when he was 12, and so did the director. And look what came of it! 🙂 My TTT

I’d forgotten that Cary Elwes wrote a book about The Princess Bride. I need to get my hands on that. Great list, and happy reading!

Yes the kids don’t always like the books we like! Ack how awful lol. Oh well what can you do? At least if they’re reaing…
I loved Roald Dahl as a kid, and I even read a Christie or two… I don’t remember those though much. I should revisit, and Cary Elwes’ book is another I’ve been wanting to get.
