Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects is Gillian Flynn’s first novel, and the third of hers that I’ve read. (I’m just realizing that starting with Gone Girl and I read them completely backwards. Ha!)
Sharp Objects starts out with Chicago-based reporter Camille Preaker headed back to her small Missouri town. Several months earlier a local girl turned up dead, and now a second girl has gone missing. Camille’s editor senses a big story and is hoping Camille can make a break through as a town insider. You all know me and spoilers, so that’s all I will say about the plot.
So…if you’ve read any Gillian Flynn, you know that her books can be pretty unsettling. Her characters have serious flaws and generally are just messed up adults. I was talking to a friend about Dark Places when I was reading it. She said, “When I read that novel I just kept flipping to the back to look at Gillian Flynn’s picture. I’d say to myself, ‘Well, she looks normal.'”
Out of the three novels I’ve read by Ms. Flynn, Sharp Objects is the least…trying to find the right word here…I guess…disturbing story. But that’s not saying much. It was disturbing and by the end…let’s just say I don’t know how Ms. Flynn thinks of these bizarre twists.
If you like a good psychological thriller, Sharp Objects is for you. If you don’t do creepy or disturbing, you may want to give this book a pass.

Thanks for this review: I read Gone Girl and loved it, but I didn’t care at all for Dark Places, and although I do have this one, as well, I can’t bring myself to read it, yet. I think she writes well, and her characters come to life as well as the setting, but like you said, her writing can be ‘unsettling.’

I giggled at the idea that you would look at the photo and think, “Well… she looks normal.” 🙂

I read Gone Girl and found it intriguing and while I won’t say I enjoyed it exactly it did hook me. I’ve attempted this one but didn’t get very far mostly because of situational issues. It sounds like I need to give this book another try.

It is good, if you are ready for the dark psychological content. If you are looking for light and fluffy, this is not it. 🙂 I did like it.

I really enjoyed this one!! I liked it more than Dark Places though I liked that too. She does come up with great twists and dark, dark books. Great review!

Yes, her books are so dark. I wonder where this stuff comes from. The ending of this one really creeped me out. 🙂
