In a Dark, Dark Wood
By Ruth Ware
Rating: 3/5 Stairs
Nora wakes up in the hospital, unable to remember the last two days and only the desperate thought what I have I done running through her head. With the police waiting outside her door and whispers of murder, she spends the night struggling to remember. It all began when she received an email inviting her to a hen party for the weekend…
What Worked for Me?
I listened to In a Dark, Dark Wood, and the narrator was excellent. I enjoyed how the book flipped back and forth in time, telling the story from Nora’s perspective in the hospital bed, desperately trying to remember the events of the last two days. The six main characters at the hen party are not particularly likable, but they are an interesting bunch.
What Didn’t Work?
Maybe it’s because I read a lot of murder mysteries, or the fact that I’ve read and listened to a lot of books in this particular genre this past year, but overall I felt like In a Dark, Dark Wood was predictable. I was able to guess who it was that was murdered, as well as whodunit. Usually in these types of thrillers there are so many twists and turns you find yourself being pulled this way and that.
Overall, the book had an interesting story and a lot of intrigue. I would have rated it higher if the mystery had been a little more…well, mysterious.
I wish you had liked this a little more… I definitely plan on reading it especially since I liked The Woman in Cabin 10 so much.

It’s not one that I would tell people, “don’t read!” 🙂 I liked it, just not a favorite for the year. It was good, but predictable (for me). I hope you like it!

Oh I am sorry you didn’t like this more. I listened and loved it. I thought the narrator was great and I didn’t figure it out. Great review!!

I did like the narrator and the story. And usually I don’t figure these types of mysteries out. I wondered if it was as obvious to everyone, or if I’ve just read enough of these I’m starting to pick up the clues easier. I guess it must be the latter! 🙂 It wasn’t a bad book, just not my favorite of the genre. I’m glad you loved it!!

Thanks for the review. This is on my list to read but I was also concerned with how many of similar style may be in the market all at once. I might push it out for a few months but sounds like still worth a read.

It was a good read. For me, I could just tell where it was going (which is unusual, I’m usually surprised!). I hope you like it!
