You. A mini-review.

You

YouI just finished You a couple of nights ago, and I’m still processing how I feel about it. The book itself was a page turner. What is this obsessed stalker going to do next? But at the same time it was pretty disturbing.

Joe Goldberg is super creepy. To put it mildly. Beck walks into his bookstore, and from that moment on her life is doomed. Joe’s sick and twisted mind decides she is the girl for him (and that she desperately wants him) and Joe’s obsession begins. And God help anyone who Joe perceives might be in his way.

Not everyone is going to like this book. Joe made me uncomfortable, pretty much throughout the whole book. Ms. Kepnes does an excellent job taking you into Joe’s mind. The mood swings, the way his mind rationalizes all of his actions. The narration is told from Joe’s perspective, as if he were constantly talking to Beck. (Thus, the title.) The worst part reading this book is you know people like Joe are really out there. They could be anyone, looking perfectly fine on the outside but being completely twisted on the inside.

You is making my 2015 Reading Challenge for “A book that scares you.” While it didn’t scare me in a Stephen King horror kind of way, it did scare me. To think that you can meet someone at a bookstore and the next day he can stalk your every move online is a scary thought. And Joe is super creepy. Did I mention that? Super. Creepy.

A page turner, but not for the faint of heart.

  1. This reminds me a bit of “Mr. Mercedes,” which is told partly from the perspective of the killer and is pretty disturbing — and King never specifies the city where the book is taking place, feeding into the idea that this could be anyone, anywhere. Eek! But at least “Mr. Mercedes” has the redeeming viewpoint of Detective Hodges and a few quirky characters to help bring some levity. Anyway, I’m intrigued by “You…” even though it sounds like it’ll give me nightmares!
