Top Ten Tuesday (TTT) brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish.
Ten Characters Who Are Fellow Book Nerds
love reading, are writers, work at a bookstore, etc.
When I started thinking about this topic, I realized that I don’t read many books featuring fellow book nerds. As always, I know I’m going to see other peoples lists and wonder why I didn’t think of that character. It took me a while, but I finally found ten. And a bonus character for all of you who actually make it to the end of the list.
So let’s get started!
Hermione Granger
Harry Potter Series
Of course Hermione is the very first character to pop into my head for this list. She is clever and loves to read and research books to add to her endless fount of information. “Haven’t you read Hogwarts, a History?” is a common question posed to pals Harry and Ron.
Annie Wilkes
Misery
I was debating here between two Stephen King characters – Annie and The Shining‘s Jack Torrance. I decided that Annie wins out after kidnapping her favorite author and holding him captive. With an axe.
Hazel Grace Lancaster
The Fault in our Stars
Hazel loves books, and one of her greatest obsessions is wondering how her favorite book ends. I mean, the author just abruptly stops the narrative. Thanks to Augustus Waters, she gets to travel to Amsterdam to try and get some answers from the author. Right before we hit All. The. Feels.
Daphne de Luce
Flavia de Luce Series
Daphne always has her nose stuck in a book. The estate’s library is her sanctuary.
Josephine March
Little Women
One of my favorite classics. Jo dreams of being a writer, and this is the story of her and her three sisters growing up in a small New England town during the civil war.
Roxy Parker
Ghostwriter Mysteries
Roxy is a ghostwriter living in Sydney, Australia. It’s inevitable that with each book she’s working on, she ends up in the middle of a mystery.
Cotton Malone
Cotton Malone Series
As a retired agent from the Magellan Billet, Cotton wants nothing more than to enjoy his life as a bookseller in Copenhagen. He has a true love and appreciation for the written word and rare books. But the Billet just keeps pulling him back in for more adventures, taking him away from his beloved bookstore.
Hugo Martson
Hugo Martson Series
Hugo works for the US Embassy in Paris, France, but he knows his way around rare books. Particularly in the first novel, The Bookseller, we see Hugo’s appreciation and love for rare books.
John Charles Gilkey
The Man Who Loved Books Too Much
This is actually a non-fiction story about a book thief. John Charles Gilkey steals rare books not for money, but because he loves books and wants them for himself. This was a really interesting read about the world of rare books.
Nina Sankovitch
Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading
Another non-fiction. Trying to cope with the death of her sister, Ms. Sankovitch dedicated a year of her life to reading one book each day and blogging a review. (I would love to do this!) She chronicles the experience in this memoir.
Bonus
Rory Gilmore
Okay, technically she doesn’t fit this list because she’s a TV character and not a book character. But Rory is probably the biggest fictional book nerd out there. She always has a book with her – even when she’s on a date with Dean.

Great list! I love Rory! She’s a lot like me — for one thing, we both have a journalism degree — and I wish I had discovered “Gilmore Girls” when I was still in high school. I only watched it for the first time a couple years ago!

Rory is such a fantastic character! I love that show. I didn’t watch it when it was airing on TV but caught up later.

You have a great list! I love seeing the characters everyone has come up with. I struggled with 10, but there are obviously a lot more out there.

It’s not always obvious, I found the first six easy but struggled with the last four, but yes, there do seem to be a lot out there that I didn’t think of!

Thanks! I saw one list that picked Augustus, thinking about it he may be an even better choice than Hazel.

Love that image of the Doctor! It’s cracking me up seeing Annie Wilkes on people’s lists. She certainly is a book lover! Just not one you’d actually want to meet… Great list!

Thanks! Yes I figured anyone crazy enough to kidnap their favorite author deserved a spot on the list. Lol

Wow. Just, wow. I only know five characters/books/series from your list! One of which I’ve actually read (TFIOS), one I’ve seen the movie adaptation of (HP), and three I’ve heard in conversations (Misery, Little Women and Gilmore Girls). And yes to the Beauty and the Best nod!

Well, to be fair – four of them (Daphne deLuce, Cotton Malone, Hugo Martson, and Roxy Parker) are all from mystery/thriller series. So if you don’t read that genre, you probably don’t know. (I highly recommend the Flavia deLuce books – The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is the first. Flavia is an 11 year old chemist living in England in the 1950s. She’s terrific.) And I don’t think those two non-fiction books were necessarily main stream.
I tend to see a lot of YA/fantasy on other peoples lists that I haven’t heard of. Which have lead me to some great finds! Another reason to love TTT. So glad you came by! 🙂
