Top Ten Tuesday (TTT) brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish.

This is another tough topic! Why so difficult? Well…

  1. I can think of books I wished they wouldn’t have turned into a movie.
  2. Many of the books/series I’ve read that could translate well have already been turned into a movie or TV show at some point. (Admittedly, some better than others.)
  3. There are plenty of books I love but I don’t think would translate well to film.

So let’s put on our thinking caps and get started.

Top Ten Books I’d Love To See As Movies/TV Shows

1. 11/22/63 – Does this count? It’s not a TV series yet, but they have cast some of the roles. I’m going to struggle to get ten on this list, so I say it counts.

2. A Cotton Malone book. Exotic locals. Hidden relics. Great characters. Plenty of action. I think these history-with-a-twist thrillers would translate well to the big screen.

3. [Insert Classic of Your Choice Here] I love movies and shows that pull a classic into a modern day setting, a la Clueless and BBC Sherlock. I’m not naming a specific classic however, as my technical brain just doesn’t have that kind of vision. Maybe The Three Musketeers? Do you have ideas on what classic would move well to a modern day film? Let me know below!

The more, the merrier.

4. The Richard Jury series – a Scotland Yard detective with a village of quirky friends. I’d like to visit with them each week on a TV series.

5. Maisie Dobbs – This would make a great movie or series. Maisie is a rare woman private investigator in London in the early 1930s. Both Maisie’s cases and her personal life would make these interesting to watch.

6. The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie – I’m a little hesitant to add this to the list. I love the book – great characters, fantastic setting. It would make a great film – if done right. But it’s one of those books you don’t want them to mess up, you know?

7. How about a redo on the Percy Jackson films? One that actually follows the books, perhaps?

What were they thinking?

8. Cinder. I love a good twist on an old fairy tale (a la the current TV show Once Upon a Time), and I think Cinder would make an excellent film.

9.  The Wishing Spell. Honestly, I’m okay with this remaining just a book. But my boys would love to see it turned into a movie.

10. The Kinsey Milhone series. This is another series that would translate well to TV. Female private detective, living in beautiful southern California in the 1980’s. What more could you ask for? I mean, besides Magnum P.I., of course.

Whew. I did it! You guys have no idea how long it took me to come up with ten books. I even had one book on here and then found it it already WAS made into a movie. (Relic.)

Most books I just enjoy reading, and for me I think they would lose their magic if made into a movie or TV show. What about you? Did you struggle with your list as much as I did? As always comment away and link to your own TTT if you’ve got one!

  4. I hadn’t even read the other comments and was coming in to say I’d love to see Percy Jackson as a Better-Than-Disney-Channel YA show with adult appeal. If they could swing the budget to do one book a season I think it could have some lasting appeal. That’s one thing I worried about with the books – that they had too many “today-specific” details that would make them weather changing times poorly. The “Ranger’s Apprentice” series developed a good voice over time and has a hero’s journey type arc that I think would make a good movie series. I visualize a lot of books as movies as I read them, and then I’m disappointed when the real movie is different. I just read The Girl on the Train and mostly enjoyed it, but part of the enjoyment comes from not knowing some things that a video interpretation would tell you right up front. (I understand even the audiobook prevents you from “mistakenly” making one of the common interpretations.)

    Oh! I thought of one. The Kitchen House. I’d love to see that as a movie. Aaaand… a quick IMDB check tells me MY wish will be granted in 2016.

  8. I love the idea of a Magnum PI type Kinsey Millhone! I vote for that one! I think Flavia would be fantastic as a min-series as long as they got the casting right and yes please on Richard Jury. That cast of characters would be fantastic on television. Can’t you just see Fox with his tissues and hypochondria!

    • I know, wouldn’t that be great to see Kinsey on screen like that! I would tune in ever week. Flavia and Jury too. You’re right, if they got the casting right it would be so fun to see them on screen.

  11. I think Maisi Dobbs would be good- I have not read those, but I have hard good thing and I like the ’30’s era. That could be neat if done well. And Percy Jackson- close to the books would be nice.
