Time for another Top Ten Tuesday (TTT) brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish. Here we go.

Top Ten ALL TIME Favorite Authors

Yeah, I’m mean like that! You could narrow it down to a genre if you it REALLY kills you…or just make your list a top 20.

All right! Here’s a Top Ten that should be pretty easy for me, considering I mostly read mysteries anyway. Without further ado, and in no particular order (and not all mystery authors)…

I solemnly swear.1. J.K. Rowling – This is just a given.

2. Elizabeth George – Her Inspector Lynley series made me love mysteries set in England, and especially those featuring New Scotland Yard.

3. M.C. Beaton – I never miss an installment of her Hamish Macbeth series – the lazy policeman in the small village of Lochdubh, Scotland. Great characters.

4. Oscar Wilde – Witty and fabulous.

5. Jacqueline Winspear – Really enjoy her Maisie Dobbs books. She puts you right into early 1930’s England, and Maisie is not your traditional detective by any means.

6. Dan Brown – The twists on history are exciting, but the puzzles found in the Robert Langdon books are what really make these thrillers different.

7. Steve Berry – Another author who writes history with a twist. Each book examines an interesting piece of history and is always a page turner.

8. P.D. James – Classic English crime with Scotland Yard’s Adam Dalgliesh. The world lost a great author when P.D. James passed away in November 2014.

9. Stephen King – Yes he’s the king of horror, but he’s also just a fabulous storyteller. Not all his books are scary. Sidenote: One of my favorites by Stephen King is this short article from 2008 he wrote for Entertainment Weekly: Stephen King’s Guide to Movie Snacks.

Let's Pretend This Never Happened10. Jenny Lawson – While The Bloggess only has one book out (with number two coming later this year), she is one funny lady. If you need a laugh, check out her book or her blog. Might I suggest reading about the giant metal chicken? Or what about Nathan Fillion and the Twine? And the Follow Up? And the Final Answer? Or any. post. with. Victor. (That’s links to four fabulous Victor posts, my friends.) [Warning that Jenny may not always be safe for work.] I could keep posting these all day, but probably should get back to my list…

Ok, ok…it is hard to keep it to just 10. Honorable Mentions:

HM 1. Wil Wheaton [Yes that guy you loved from Stand By Me and Star Trek:The Next Generation – or am I just dating myself?] – It was a toss up who to keep in the Top 10 – Jenny Lawson or Wil. Still not sure if I made the right choice. 😉 I love Wil’s writing on his blog, and his books are excellent. The minute I first fell in love with Wil’s writing was when he wrote The Trade.

HM 2. Sue Grafton – 23 Kinsey Milhone books later, and I still always want to read more. I hope someone decides to add more letters to the alphabet once she reaches Z. I don’t want Kinsey to end.

HM 3. [Old School] Anne Rice – I’m talking the original five books in The Vampire Lestat series, as well as The Mayfair Witches. Fun worlds to be immersed in.

I do love Twilight, but this makes me giggle. Every time I see it.

    • Sue Grafton pulled me right into Kinsey’s world. Luckily when I started she was in the middle of the alphabet, maybe around K or so. Now she is writing X. I am going to be so sad when she is done!

    • I would start at the beginning with Elizabeth George. The beauty of the series (for me) is the characters and their relationships. P.D. James I have bounced around, totally out of order. She is fantastic.

  3. I loved Jenny Lawson’s book! It was laugh-out-loud funny pretty much the whole way through. You’ve got several authors on your list that I’ve been meaning to read for a while — Jacqueline Winspear, Elizabeth George, M.C. Beaton and Oscar Wilde.

  4. I too had J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, and Oscar Wilde! I definitely tend to lean toward classical authors, though I don’t know why. I love plenty of contemporaries too.

  7. Mysteries are the best. 🙂 You’ve got a great list here. J.K. Rowling made my list too, as you know. I can’t believe I haven’t read her mysteries yet. Soon, I hope. Sue Grafton is awesome! I love her books. She made my list too. I really liked Jenny Lawson’s book. I listened to the audio version and couldn’t stop laughing (or crying, depending on which story she was sharing).

    I have only read one Elizabeth George book and two P.D. James books. They are both authors I am dying to read more by.

    • I’ve read The Cuckoo’s Calling and I really enjoyed it. The Silkworm is on my to-read list. A Casual Vacancy is good too, but for some reason when I picked it up I thought it was a mystery and it is not.

      I can’t wait for Jenny Lawson’s new book this fall!
